Every story has its beginning and the case of Latin Hip Hop
is no different. The clash of cultures that Mellow Man Ace is
produced of would not only reflect the culture of young Latin
youth across the US but would become the starting point of a
new world wide movement today called "Latin Hip-Hop".
Born in
Cuba, raised on the streets South Gate California Mellow would
end up forming a group with his brother Sen Dog, Dj Muggs and
B Real called DVX (Devastating Vocal Xcellence) and started
doing shows up and down Los Angeles at local house parties and
anywhere where they could. After a few years Mellow Man was
signed by Delicious Vinyl then to Capital.... After a few years

establishing himself as a solo artist
Mellow Man Ace recorded
his debut album Escape From Havana releasing it in 1989 on Capitol.
Almost one year later, the single "Mentirosa" became
a Top 20 hit with Ace rapping over a crafty hook from Santana's "Evil
Ways" The song would not only make Mellow Man Ace the first
Latin Rap artist to reach Gold and Platinum in the U.S. but
also across Latin America becoming a direct influence on the
gobal Latin Rap landscape prepering us for today's movement.
Mellow
Man would become one of the busiest Latinos in Hip Hop in the
years to come, recording his follow up album "Brother With Two
Tongues",
writing songs for Cypress Hill debut album , taking part of
movie soundtracks, making daily TV appearances and worked on
numerous on side projects.
After more than a few years of being
silent Mellow Man Ace would again team up with his Soul Assassin
family in the year 2000 and drop his 3rd album "From Darkness
To The Light" putting him back on right
where he left off in front of TV appearance and movie soundtracks
and new classics like " Guillotine Tactics" and "Te La Fe".
He to write six songs for Cypress Hill Spanish album "Los Grandes
Exitos" which received Billboard's Latin Rap Album of the Year
2000 and a Gold Album in Mexico.
In 2002, Mellow Man was inducted
into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. marking the name Mellow Man Ace
in histroy books forever. In 2004 droped his 4th solo album "Vengo
A Cobrar" and now the end of 2005
is wrapping up the long awaited album "The Reyes Brothers" due
to drop in 2006

Mellow Man Ace : The record company fucked up and the record suffered because of it.

Mellow Man Ace : The difference was Darkness into the Light was crate digging time and Vengo A Cobrar was keyboard layered.
LaUnion1910 : De toda la mœsica que has grabado atreves de los anos, Cual tu tema favorito y porque?
Mellow Man Ace : Mentirosa because it gave me a life.
LaUnion1910 : Yo tengo el proyecto de Rock Vs.Rap, un compilado de Mash Ups y Rap-core, donde aparecen varios nombres importantes como Sen Dog de Cypress Hill, Sick Jacken del Psycho Realm, KRS-1 entre muchos otros, exactamente como participastes en ese proyecto?
Mellow Man Ace : I co-produced that album with good friend and fellow musician Lanny Cordola.
LaUnion1910 : se dice que hubo un group formado por Son Doobie de Funkdoobiest, B Real de Cypress Hill llamado Serial Ryhme Killas que nos pudes decir sobre ese projecto y porque nonca salio?
Mellow Man Ace : Yes, the group was B Real, Son Doobie, myself and a kid named XL, but XL passed away during the recording so we felt it was best to not finish the project.
LaUnion1910 : Tambien recientemente vi en tu pagina que ahora en el 2006 sale un projecto con Sen Dog, que nos puedes decir sobre este disco, cuales son los invitados, quien lo produce, etc?
Mellow Man Ace : Warren G, B Real, Bishop La Mont, Fred Wreck, DJ Muggs, Bishop Don Magic Juan just to name a few.
LaUnion1910 : Hablando de Cypress Hill tengo entendido que tu tuvistes algo que ver con la formacion del grupo y tambiŽn que colaboraste mucho en el disco en Espa–ol?
Mellow Man Ace :Yes, I was an original member of Cypress Hill but I went solo after my dad kicked me out of the house. And yes, I co-wrote the Cypress Spanish album with Jack of Psycho Realm.
LaUnion1910 : Hoy en día el el Rap en Espa–ol es un fenómeno mundial no solo nos viene de paises Latinoamericanos , sino que tambien de lugares como Francia, Dinamarca, Suecia, etc y sin duda se sabe que el padrino del Rap Latino es Mellow Man Ace. Cuando grabeste "Escape From Havana" te imaginaste que el Rap Latino o Espa–ol llegaría ser tan grande e importante como lo es hoy en día y como ves el futuro del Hip Hop de Habla Hispana?
Mellow Man Ace : I recorded Escape from Havana spring of 89 and I never imagined it would be as big as it is. I am not a fortune teller so I don't know where it is going but I know where I'm gonna take it.
LaUnion1910 : Si yo te preguntara por unos ejemplos de buen Hip Hop en Espa–ol, cuales son los primeros discos o grupos que te llegan a la mente?
Mellow Man Ace : To be honest there are very few. But I like Don Dinero.
LaUnion1910 : hora cambiando un poco el tema, para ti como Cubano que exactamete opinas del Argentino Che Guevara se a vuelto en un simbolo icon entre las jovenes hoy en dia?
Mellow Man Ace : I don't know much about Che, all I know is that he helped Fidel Castro take my motherland. |
