LA Times - Independent Music Event

On May 23, 2008 independent hip hop artists, independent businesses, and independent websites have produced an event to showcase and promote their business and brands. The event will take place in Hollywood, California at the famious Vanguard.

"Our LA Times", a theme across the event, portrays the fast growing independent music network in Los Angeles and around the world. By using the internet to communicate, plan, and promote these events.

Our LA Times, is produced by Frankie Kuckles (Sickside Street Music & Legion of Slugs), Eva (Pink Mink Mafia), and Oszie (LaUnion1910). The three are all involved in independent business and focused on growing their network and brands.

The event will be a birthday bash for Eva, and will also have a special appearance by Eric Bobo (Cypress Hill), he will be promoting his new album "Meeting of the Minds".

The event will consist of live acts by some of LA's top inde artists. Including:

The music industry has been shifting direction in the last decade or so. The corporate system to produce, market, and sell music, set up by labels years ago, is no longer producing the same results. Lagging album sales and large music retail stores closing are signs of what the music industry has and currently is going through.

The internet has given the upper hand to the consumer, by giving them an unlimited amount of music and entertainment choices in multiple formats. Consumers are no longer limited to only music from the music labels radio stations, tv shows, or publications. And payola doesn't work as well on the internet.

Before the internet, the labels passed their new artists through their corporate machine (radio, tv shows, tour venues, etc), and the artists were able to pay the loan ("advance") back to the label. Now, with that system no longer working, the labels are redefining their business models and approach to online sales.

In the early internet years, the music labels and other corporations were acting against the consumers for downloading music (i.e. Napster, lawsuits against ISPs & minors ). It wasn't until Apple introduced a new business model through iTunes, that the labels finally realized that in order to capitalize on online downloads, they needed to work with the consumer instead of against.

While labels are trying to figure their new business models, there's a large amount of independent artists venturing on their own. It is a far better option than getting a loan "Advance" from the label. And as before, the artists still require to produce, market, and sell their own music.

This is where Big Duke (The Psycho Realm / Sick Symphonies) and Frankie Knuckles saw an opportunity. By offering their music production and artist development services to independent hip hop artists.

Although, there are now multiple channels for an artist to remain independent, they still need to develop and use the best resources available to create good music. Artists are able to grow their talent and network by associating and working along other independent artists, producers, designers, distributors, etc.

Big Duke and Frankie Knuckles have the experience of producing, marketing, and distributing their own material for years. Big Duke also has a solid reputation and the credibility amongst the independent hip hop industry. His fans and network stretch from Los Angeles, California to Japan.

Coming in 2008 the release of the music video "Land of Shadows", from the classic hip-hop album "Dj Muggs Vs Sick Jacken".

Dj Muggs from Cypress Hill and Sick Jacken from the sick ass Psychco Realm, have collaborated to bring one of hip-hops most anticipated albums.

One of the first videos to be released "Land of the Shadows" was directed by Michael Lozano, for The Republic Vision, and produced by Maurice Renaaux (The Republic Vision). The official video is set to release in February 2008, there will aso be a release party held, more details will come soon.

Last weekn in Los Angeles, California the 5th Annual Latin Rap Conference was held. The conference started on Wednesday September 12, 2007, with a grand opening show featureing some of hip hops top talent. The performers included, Kemo 'The Blaxican', GUIC, EL Vuh, Sonny Blue, Malverde, Sinful, Chino XL, Transcend, and a preview of DJ Muggs & Sick Jacken's new album. There was also a very special appearance by Big Duke of The Psycho Realm.

The first showcase was also the official release party for the new LATV show - 'The Homies'. The creator, David Gonzalez, of the homies was there to celebrate the unity among the Latinos in hip-hop and worlwide. There was also a special appearance from Breal and Send Dog of Cypress Hill. And in a rare ocassion, BReal freestyled.

The second showcase began with a tribute to Cypress Hill. Shysti, the Latin Rap Conference founder, presented BReal an award for their dedication and achievement to music. BReal gladly accepted the award, and encouraged everyone there to pursue their dreams and continue to move forward in reaching them. He also thanked the Latino artists that came before them and reminded everyone to always look back and help the person behind them.

The conference showcases were a complete success, the conference showcases ended on Friday night with most of the industry gathering for one more night to link up and creatively join forces to continue this fast growing Latin rap / Hip-Hop Movement.

Big Ups to Shysti for holding it down for 5 years! The conference continues to gain momentum, and Shysti and the conference wil be here in 2008. We will let you know as soon as the next conrference date is announced. We will also have a special interview with Shysti, to discuss the Latin Rap Conference, hip-hop, talent, and his upcoming projects.
