The Virgin of Guadalupe is a 16th century Mexican icon of the Virgin Mary which appears on wall murals and tattoos around the streets of East LA. This pod by vc2 producer Carlos Aguilar explores this iconography with interviews of artists, academics and people from the community.

Elika Crespo is a model, singer, and independent artist in the entertainment industry. An independent woman,working and living her passion for expression in performing arts andmusic.

Elika has been successful in her acting career, she was recently a starring lead in the movie "SPIN", directed by Dan Neira. Youcan also see her appearing as a lead in Pitbull's music video "Secret Admirer, and on DjMuggs Vs Sick Jacken - "Land of Shadows" video. She is also very busywith commercials. This year alone she has been recording commercials for Ford, BOSE sound system, and made an appearance on "Dexter" and"Everybody Hates Chris".

Elika is also working on her music career. Get a glimpse on how Elika hooked up with hip hop lyricist CHINO XL, and her plans on the music end.

From TV shows, music videos, and movies Elika is able to maintain her balance with work and life. Her dedication and hard work earn her respect that allows her to connect with other similar people. In return she is able to choose her own goals and guide her own career.

We hooked up with Elika and she gave us an insight on how she manages her own career and how she likes to enjoy her healthy life.

LaUnion1910: We have seen you modeling on the pages of OYE Magazine, Pitbull's music video, acting on Dan Neiras "SPIN" movie, and modeling on some of JOKER's marketing materials.From modeling to acting, what have been some of your most rewarding experiences in your modeling and acting career?

Elika Crespo:There has been so many rewarding experiences its hard to mention them all. The ability to work on different projects and meet so many unique and interesting people is rewarding. The masses of people you can reach on an emotional level is also very gratifying, specially when there is an important message to relay.

LaUnion1910: LaUnion1910: Tells us about your experience with Director Dan Neira and the cast for the movie "SPIN"?

Elika Crespo: Dan is an amazing man and director. I was blessed to have met him and that he was willing to choose me as one of the leads of his film. He had faith in me. Aside from attaining the obvious, its as simple and complex as finding those few people that genuinely believe in you and have no hidden agendas.......Dan is one of them.

LaUnion1910: We recently saw you in Pitbull's video "Secret Admirer", how did you link up with Pitbull? Are you working on any projects with him?

Elika Crespo: I originally thought of working with Pit, for years. I respect his movement. It all about his Cuban culture, Miami, and having fun.
I approached RIME Magazine together with Estevan Oriol and we set up a photoshoot in Miami. It was appropriate and perfect.. Two Cuban Miami breed Artist in a portrayal of scarface..meets Cuba in the 1940s. Since then..we have always kept in touch, always working together when we can. I did some small background vocals for one of his songs with Little John and we are in the midst of discussing some future projects for TV.
I was then called by his manager to be a part of the music video, and of course... I accepted. Its always a pleasure working with him. He is an amazing person, loyal to his people. IM like a sponge when IM around him, always absorbing every bit of information I can..ive learned so much from him. He has great business sense, so much insight and talent.....IM proud of what he has accomplished and what he will continue to achieve...He is not a pompous man, nor is he flashy. He treats everyone equal and is always courteous ....AND HIS BEATS ARE INSANE!

LaUnion1910: You are originally from Miami, and currently reside in Los Angeles. What do you think are the biggest differences in the LA and Miami markets?

Elika Crespo: WOW!!!! So many things.....Hahahah.
I was born there, so..... its different. People who don't really know Miami, think its all about South Beach..... There is so much more.....Its a melting pot of ALL Latino ethnicity's.....as well as Europeans and Central Americans. The food, the night life, the music, the beaches, the boating.......
I believe, the Miami market is open to a more "eclectic sound" and it invites the unknown with more ease and acceptance.
LA IS NO JOKE. I love to live here and i have finally accepted the fact that its my 2nd HOME. It taught me to be tough and present at all times....Every time IM in LA, I conform to a more business like mentality, in Miami, you cant help but slip and party more often......the weather in LA is amazing, The Latino culture in LA is so massive and different. Its amazed me, when I first moved here. I enjoy both cities, LA has been very good to me.

LaUnion1910: You are very beautiful and always seem to have the energy needed for this industry. What type of diet do you maintain? What would you recommend to all of us who are trying to get in shape?!

Elika Crespo: Thank you....Thats very nice to say. I don't know if my regimen will work for everyone....but I will definitely share.
I workout in a cardio-weight toning class 3 to 4 times a week. I run 2 times per week and IM a vegetarian.
Oh and I drink 2 to 3 liters of water per day. No drugs or smoking, but love to drink my red wine!
The rest is about surrounding yourself with positive people, praying, and reading up on a lot of fengshui .....lol

LaUnion1910: What are your thoughts on relationships? Are you currently in a relationship? How do you handle the nice and rude comments you often get?.

Elika Crespo: I don't really like to talk about my personal life, IM not seriously involved right now. In regard to comments people make it varies. I always enjoy the nice comments and take them to heart. Its uplifting. Rude comments are expected..there are plenty of haters out there and i guess i must be important in their lives if they feel the need to go out of their way and talk about me. My response to those type of people...is to find a hobby, do something that occupies your time, other than gossiping about others....Either way IM flattered. To those who show me love....i embrace it and never take it for granted.

LaUnion1910: We've seen you on various pieces for Joker Clothing, how did you begin to work with photographer/director Estevan Oriol and the Joker Brand team?

Elika Crespo: I met estevan at the Latino Film Festival about 5 years ago, through a mutual friend And one day he took photos of me, and since then he has been one of the few photographers to really capture me. Him and Mr.Cartoon played an important role in my career and IM thankful to have met them. I later went on to shoot some adds, videos and any type of promotional work they needed. They have great vision and talent. I wish them continual success.

LaUnion1910: What are your tips on fashion? What are some of your favorite brands?

Elika Crespo: I cant say I have a particular favorite brand..there are so many cool designers out there it overwhelming. Although for evening couture, I would have to say VALENTINO, is one of my favorites. I like to wear what's appropriate and what compliments my figure..sexy is OK as long as its not vulgar.....

LaUnion1910: We heard your song with LA hip hop artist, Chino XL. How did you hook up with Chino XL? What are your plans on the music production end? Do you have any immediate plans to release an album or songs?

Elika Crespo: I met Chino on the set of a film we did together in la. Chino is one of the most gifted lyricist out there. He is a great friend and working with him was amazing....Its safe to say that God has blessed that man with a wicked tongue...i hope to continue to work with him in the near future. As far as my album, IM currently working with a producer/songwriter/musician named Tim Carter, he also produced the track I did with Chino. He knows my voice and has trained me for several years now. Its an advantage to work with a producer that can create a song around your vocal ability and limitations....ive learned so much from him. He is so talented...IM blessed to have met him. We are searching for those songs that represent that sound IM after. Afro Cuban meet mainstream Urban......

LaUnion1910: Do you have a manager or an assistant? What has your experience been working as an independent artist, model, actress?

Elika Crespo: A good manager is so hard to find. Its a marriage. When I come across that person in my life I will be so happy, because I need one desperately However, I don't want to force the issue...It will come when its time.

LaUnion1910: On a non-working day, what is a typical day for Elika Crespo?

Elika Crespo: I like to wake up early and enjoy a cup of coffee while i read my emails. Then I workout and start my day. I love to do outdoor activities such as hiking, ridding bike and spend time with friends...if I were in Miami id do the same with my family....i love my family and friends very much and enjoy spending as much time as I can.

LaUnion1910: Are you voting this year? If so, who are you voting for?

Elika Crespo: lol......My dad always taught me to avoid discussing politics and religion.
However, I will most definitely exercise my right to vote.

LaUnion1910: What projects are you currently working on for 2008?

Elika Crespo: I've Started 2008 with a bang! I've shot a commercial for Chrysler (National), FORD (Latino), Miller (National) and 2 print adds for Pizza Hut and Bose Sound System. On TV I did and episode on "Dexter" and "Everybody Hates Chris" I'm ready for what ever God puts in my path. I thank God everyday and IM blessed. What more can I ask for? I do what I love, IM healthy and so are my family and friends.

LaUnion1910: Where did you grow up? What are some of the early memories of music in your household? What type of music are you listening to now?

Elika Crespo: Celia Cruz,Stevie Wonder, El Gran Combo, Elvis Presley,The Platters, Enrique Chia, Pavarotti,Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow.. where some of the artist I listened to at home growing up.
I love all types music as long as its not heavy metal...no disrespect, I just cant seem to get into that.

LaUnion1910: In your opinion, what makes a man sexy?

Elika Crespo: Being secure, Clean, well mannered, well read, considerate and a good son!

Elika Crespo: I wanted to thank you for your interest in my career and allowing me share several aspects of my life with you. Its a tough ladder to climb, and IM doing it one step at a time with my ethics and self respect. I can honestly say that i sleep very well at night because everything i have achieved till now has been with hard work and dignity. Not many people in my line of work can say that.

MIC MC is Realizm Hip Hop

Music is a collaboration of instruments, ideas, people, and movements. Almost everything in life has some type of tune playing in the background. Sometimes its people screaming, other times its a bird in the background. For most artists, they interpret their life and expriences into music.

MIC MC, portrays his life and experiences in his new album - "On Campus". MIC MC's interest in Hip Hop started at a young age. At the age of 11 he already knew that he wantted to be an MC and started taking notes.

By the age of 17, he hooked up with one of LA's most known underground artists "Krazy Race". Krazy Race formed Realizm Records and quickly realized MIC MC talent and invited him to be part of his crew. MIC MC and Krazy Race quickly began to work on his "On Campus" project. The project is now complete and performing real well.

We checked some of the tracks on his album, and MIC MC is well on his way to become one of LA's top hip hop artists. He interprets his life and point of view on this album. His voice and lyrics are a sign of his early work and preparation.

Keep a close eye on MIC MC, this young MC is sure to continue making noise. We hooked up with MIC MC and he gave us an insight to his career, camp, and inspirations.

LaUnion1910: We know you started your path towards your career as an MC at a very young age. How old were you when you started gaining interest in hip hop and music? Who was influencing you at that age?

MIC MC: I’ve always had a big interest in music. Music runs through my family. I’ve listened to hip hop for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to Cypress Hill, Dr Dre, Delinquent Habits, Psycho Realm, Chino XL, and Canibus. Those are my main influences. It wasn’t til age eleven when I decided to be an MC.

LaUnion1910: What motivated you to stay focused and patient towards your long term goals?

MIC MC: I wanted to make a living off of music and since I started at a young age I knew it was a long ways to go. The more I wrote and performed for people, the more positive feedback I got. That’s what really kept me motivated over the years. The way I see it, I have to do something with my music, that’s just the way it is!

LaUnion1910: Where did you grow up? How would you describe the last 5 years?

MIC MC: I grew up in the 805, which is ventura county. The past five years have been a trip.
Those were my high school years, so I had a lot going on. It was tough trying to balance everything. School, music, working on the side, relationships, getting into trouble, just basically dealing with all the crazy ass shit that any teenager gotta deal with. My style changed a lot over the years too. I met a lot of cool people too, cats that I grew up listening to. They basically let me know that I had a good thing going with this music shit and to keep doing what I’m doing. So the past five years was basically me making a name for myself, gaining that respect, and making track after track every Sunday.

LaUnion1910: Do you have brothers and sisters involved in music? Are any other of your family members involved in music?

MIC MC: Yeah, my pops was the drummer for a rock n roll group called “Los Blue Angels”. I learned a lot about the music biz from him. I also got an older brother who drums in a grind core band.

LaUnion1910: Tell us about Realizm Rekords? How did you meet Krazy Race?

MIC MC: Realizm Rekords was created by Krazy Race in 07. Being that he had already dropped 2 albums and I was getting ready to drop mine, he decided to start up a new label to release my project and all the other projects that were soon to come after. I met Krazy Race through my brother, TOUCH of OGSICKFLICKS. COM. TOUCH was taking pictures for Krazy Race. I was 11 when my brother first played me Krazy Race’s tracks. I was really feelin that shit and I wanted to make tracks too. TOUCH told me if I wrote some verses and recorded em, he would send em to Krazy Race. So that’s what I did and about a week later Krazy Race hit up TOUCH and told him to bring me into to the lab. I went to the lab, met Krazy Race, Laced my first track and ever since then I been putting it down with the krazy race camp.

LaUnion1910: We heard a couple of the tracks of your upcoming debut album "On Campus", and it sounds real solid. Tell us about your work on this album? How long did it take you to reach this point?

MIC MC: Mic MC: The album itself took 2 years. When I was 17, we started the album. We released it a day after I turned 19. I wrote all the tracks and made sure they all had some sort of concept behind them. What good is a track without a concept? Some tracks on the album have a more laid back tone, other tracks are hype up or just straight up grimey. I worked with a lot of different producers on this project because I wanted every track on the album to sound way different then the next.

LaUnion1910: What are some of the tracks you have on there? What was your main subject focus for the album? The theme of the album is On Campus.

MIC MC: The whole album was recorded while I was in high school so the title seemed pretty relevant. I got all types of tracks on this album. I got a track called “Behind School Scenes” which talks about the reality of being on school campus. You got to deal with the drugs, gangs, and psychos shooting up your school! I got a track called “Blood Brothers” which is me and TOUCH basically telling the story of our lives growing up as brothers. I got a track for the ladies called “Tell Me Why” which actually talks about my ex. Then I got a track called “The Last Page” which is on that End of the World Prophecy Type Shit. So with all that being said you can see how each track is so different from the next.

LaUnion1910: What producers were involved in your project? Any one else you would like to work with in the future?

MIC MC: I had a lot of different producers on this project. Cire, Ringleader DJ Ace of Rhyme Poetic Mafia, Brainwave of Global City, Nate Fox, Apakalips, Grizzly Gambino, Samco & Kastro, Malice, Beelo. I would like to work with Sick Jack or the homies from Street Platoon, Grime, Chino XL, Ras Kass, Vinnie Paz.

LaUnion1910: For those who would like to know more about LA independent hip hop, who else would you recommend? who do you bump when your not working?

MIC MC: Lately I’ve been bumping the new Cire album and the Sicko Soldado Album. Both really dope artists. Bad News who was on Thief Sicario’s album also got alot of dope mixtapes to check out. Me and Bad News got a track coming up on the next project too.

LaUnion1910: Since your fresh off school, what music is dominating the high school campus right now? What are people tuning into?

MIC MC: People on the high school campus listen to some wack shit. Mostly I would hear people bumping shit that you can dance to, but lyrically its weak! The real hip hop heads at my school were always bumping wu tang, immortal technique, jedi mind tricks, shit like that…

LaUnion1910: What other projects are in the works for you and Realizm Records? Who is part of Realizm Records?

MIC MC: Since my album just dropped, I plan to hit the lab ASAP and get started on the next one. Other then that, Realizm Rekords is releasing a compilation called “The World Is Ours”, which will be released in 2 volumes and feature artist such as krazy race, thief sicario, sick jacken, immortal technique, and a lot of other sick ass emcees. There’s an OG SICKFLICKS Compilation which is also in the making. Krazy Race will be dropping his third album within the next year or so too.

LaUnion1910: What do you think of labels? Latin Rap? Chicano Rap? Ganstar Rap? where do you classify you music under?

MIC MC: I think Latin Rap has come along ways, straight up. You look back at the history and you look at it now and you see how some of the veterans are still doin this shit today, which is dope! Cuz shit…I plan to be rapping for as long as this earth exists! Chicano rap, Gangster Rap, all that shits coo, you just got to get in where you fit in you know? I’ve always been more into the political, lyrical type hip hop. I’m all about music that speaks the truth. That’s why I linked up with Realizm Rekords because that’s the type of shit they on. Political, Lyrical, and speakin the truth on every track. I classify my music as hip hop cuz that’s what it is, straight up.

LaUnion1910: Where do you see MIC MC in 5 years?

MIC MC: Still makin music, dropping album after album, each one sicker then the one before!

LaUnion1910: You have been actively advertising and marketing online for about a year now. What prompted your decision to pursue an online business?

LatinaBeatz: A lot of people in the business have always told me I need to get payed for what I do. I've never done this for money. But love doesn't always pay the bills. I've been in the scene for a while involved in a lot of media projects so I just decided to put all my contacts, connects and network into a sucessfull and effective package for those who need the exposure.

LaUnion1910: You work with both music artists and small businesses. What are some of the advantages of artists and businesses using your services?

LatinaBeatz:I have a diverse network from music to clothing lines and other business's. A huge advantage I believe is my ability to get the word out to the masses in a unique way that people take notice and pay attention. I am always asked to host a Dvd, T'v Net radio show or segment. Photo shoots or Drops, Since I'm always doing public projects, the more people see who I am, the more they will look at what I do and who I've marketed or interviewed.

LaUnion1910: You have a close ear on the music scene in Los Angeles, what artists would you recommend to our users?

LatinaBeatz:That's a great question. I don't know if people are aware of how much raw talent comes from here. Of course I will always recommend The Psycho Realm. Their music is a rarity and it is Los Angeles if it wasn't for their music I literally would not be doing what I do. To go from a fhuge fan to working for them is surreal. LaUnion1910: What marketing advice would you give to someone who started their music career or small business?

LatinaBeatz:Hustle. You are your product, Sell yourself. If you can spend $100.00 at the bar you can spend double on your future. The net is a huge tool. Use Myspace to your advantage, Add and comment everyone affiliated with the music scene or your target demographic. Get on these video sharing sites like YouTube. Google websites, Ask for interviews,hit up the forums, make your presence known. Hit up emcees for collabs, Hit every show you know thats going on, get at the promoters, Don't expect to be payed right away. It's always effective to have your own little street team. Mandatory to have your epk, samples or business card with your contact info clearly legible, put together a Press kit. Get at everyone make your presence known. Even if you gotta stand outside on Hollywood Blvd with a Cd Player and ask peeps to take a listen. Same with business's target your market and expand everywhere, If your a clothing line hit up Emcees or people you know who gets attention and give them free gear to rock. Expect to give some stuff away for free. Invest in booths and tents, Set up your merchandise at local shows or community events. Takes money to make money. and of course get at me for my services!

LaUnion1910: What websites do you use to network? What were some of the first websites you visited, when you first started to use the internet?

LatinaBeatz: I've been on the net for 10 years, I remember the stone age lol. as far as the first I networked with have to say Dubcnn that's the first site I wrote for, from there I've written for various, from Brownpride.com to my home now Raptalk.net. It's dope to see so many different Hip Hop sites.

LaUnion1910: There seems to be very little investment into Latin owned business, even though its the largest growing market. Why do you think that is?

LatinaBeatz: I think there is a huge boom in latin/hispanic business's I think its a struggle to market it outside of the box, far beyond Univision and Telemundo.The problem is not enough people know about them, It would be dope to see a commerical about King Taco on an Asian Channel, The world is now a melting pot, Lets get creative and stop being so afraid and vice versa How many Latino's love Sushi? it goes beyond food to clothes and music. Cross market. My pet peeve is the lack of Latinos on Televison and movies

LaUnion1910: As Latinos in the U.S., we are influenced to various types of music. From norteño, alternative, to hip hop. Who are some of your favorite music artists?

LatinaBeatz: Being Mexican/Venezuelan I cannot live without my salsa, Merengue, Mariachi!!! Anyone who knows me knows I am the biggest Thalia fan. Selena and Alicia Villarreal are my all time favs. I actually listen to Spanish music more than anything. Control Machete is 1 of my favs. There is so many. Mana, Chente.. I admire Christina Aguilera to Joss Stone. I love my Rock Led Zeppelin to the Nirvana. To the Funk, Tina Marie to my back in the day K.R.L.A oldies. When it comes to Hip Hop... to many to name.

LaUnion1910: Both Amazon.com and iTunes have made significant efforts to tap into the Latin music market, yet there seems to be a shortage of Latin music to fill the demand. Why do you think the shortage in good Latin music?

LatinaBeatz: I feel the shortage comes from the same problem with the extinct of real hiphop from radio to T.V. Stereo types have a lot to do with it. If you don't fit what the popular image is then your in the cracks, Music that is mainstream especially the Latin market is not really what I assume we will buy. I know I rather bump some old Chente than some puppet saturating the market. Itunes is the wave of the future, it allows everyone to sell their music. I think it's one sided if people only pay attention to the mainstream latinos advertised on it.

LaUnion1910: Most of the large music labels are trying to figure out new business models for distributing and selling music online. Do you think these labels will fade out, and the independent artist will have better results?

LatinaBeatz: The internet is scary but a blessing. Scary for the music industry as a whole. Labels don't have the power anymore which is why they are almost gone. A blessing for the fact anyone and everyone can be on the same business level. You don't need a record label to be heard or seen, Itunes is a pioneer of what all record sales will be counted by. Record/Label deals are a joke I think people have a misconception of what it contains. its no longer you sign the deal and your handed a hundred thousand advancement and your superstar over night. Reality is You sign your life and you gotta push yourself before they even toss a penny your way. They mold you into something your not majority of the time. You have to sell your units on your own before they give you a lousy couple hundred to keep you motivated and still they take a percentage of that. Indie is the way to go, its really the only way. Distrubtion deals are a far better deal. Cdbaby isa good alternative.

LaUnion1910: Do you listen to any radio stations? Which ones?

LatinaBeatz: Hip Hop is not on the radio. I rarely listen to the radio. Unless it's Tom Leykis, Kluv (Spanish), Rock Radio Stations Old School Stations.

LaUnion1910: How do you balance work and play? What are some of your favorite things to do on your time off?

LatinaBeatz: I love going to shows, sometimes it's best of both worlds. I'm not a party girl, I love hanging out with my my friends, going to bars or hanging out shopping, real chill stuff. My life is never dull or boring there's always something popping up.

LaUnion1910: Do you plan to continue your career in advertising? What other career plans would you consider?

LatinaBeatz: I'm in the works of expanding big time. I would love to get more involved in volunteer work for human and animal rights, Music is a gift but there are serious issues in this word that exist and I plan to bring them to light. I am thinking of writting a couple books. I have my whole life ahead of me.

JoyLuv an independent electronic music artist from New York started her career at a young age. Luckily, she also realized at a young age, that the best way to express her talent and emotions was by venturing off on her own as an independent artist. Having been recognized by a music label early in her career, she quickly saw the big disadvanatages that a large label brings with it.

JoyLuv is now on her own and well on her way to create some of the best electronic soulful music in NYC and the world. She currently teamed up with producer J. Glaze, and they are both working hard to produce music for her upcoming album in Summer 2008.

1) Your career began as a professional musician at a very young age, tell us a little about Joy at the age of 15 and what inspired you then?

At 15, I was fighting with my two sides. I was involved with a choir that I rehearsed with four times a week. We traveled around the world and performed in competitions. At the same time I had my rebellious, downtown-girl side. But through it all, I was just inspired to learn as much as I possibly could about music. How music was made, and what I could do with harmonies; things like that. Also, I was just beginning to learn about the other end of the spectrum: electronic music. Production, engineering and acoustics, all important aspects of making and understanding great music.

2) How did you land a record label deal and why did you decide to venture as an independent artist instead?

Well, my friend from high school hooked me up with my first job at Bad Boy Ent. He knew that I sang and thought it would be a great way get into the biz.
They were looking for interns so he brought me in for an interview. The next day I had a cubicle, and was filing away like my life depended on it. But It was cool because I got to see how everything was done. it was a pretty big scale operation, especially for a young kid, but I got to really see the cohesiveness that went into making it work and getting all the elements of the business done.

Soon, my hard work got noticed and I started getting invited to a lot of studios to sing. I found myself asking a lot of questions outside the booth, and in the back where all the production was done. I remember wanting to know what all the buttons, and knobs and faders did. That was really was the birth of me finding my niche into music production.

As to why I ventured off, my whole life I have been singing other peoples music, writing music for other people, and engineering other people’s projects. I really wanted to pour my heart and soul into a project of my own. Working with J. Glaze is really the first thing I’ve done specifically for me, or us, and know that it is not going to anybody else. I can sing whatever I want to sing about, and really let loose

3) How would you describe your music? Tell us your experience as an independent artist?

I’m into a lot of dark, electronic pop music. I try to embody the and soul of an artist like Erykah Badu or Amy Winehouse while placing it into a more up-tempo futuristic sound. The music is still a series of contrasting moods. Its not all about going out and having a blast. It’s about life experiences and translating it into music.

4) Tell us about your music producer J. Glaze. What music software do you use for your productions? Do you use a mac or pc?

Glaze is a machine. I have yet to meet someone with a work ethic like his and that really inspires me to keep pace. He’s still young, but has already worked with a ton of industry artists and is only picking up more steam. You can check him out on my page and at www.myspace.com/JGlaze.

Regarding the equipment, Glaze is like Harry Houdini. He wouldn’t want me to give away all the magician’s secrets. but I can tell you that he uses a Macbook Pro laptap and Cubase for both beatmaking and song recording. Within Cubase he uses a variety of soft synths and plug-ins from Native Instruments, Spectrasonics, Plug Sounds, Waves and Ultrafunk.

5) You just posted a new song, "Heartbeat" on myspace, tell us about what inspired you to write this song? Can we expect an EP or album in 2008?

Heartbeat was really a spontaneous record that we recorded in early February. we were just having a great time in the studio one night, bonding over beats and cocktails, keeping it upbeat. It was one of the first songs we did, and is really a product of the great chemistry we have in the studio since day one. The dynamic I have with him musically supercedes any ive ever known. we’re both classically trained, “functioning” musicians and it makes everything so pleasant. Both of us are always thinking about music, and we’re both down to work at any hour of the day, seven days a week.

In terms of an album, there will definitely be one in late summer of 2008. We’re also really excited about the opportunities that modern technology offers. We’ll be on iTunes next week around the world and we plan on offering up new songs to fans on a constant basis. I’m really excited about the ability to get music to fans extremely fast. If I make a song on a hot summer day, and the mood of the song reflects that, the fans will be able to share in that emotion. That level of immediate interaction really gives me a lot of inspiration as I’m recording.

6) Tell us about the music video your working on. With so many music categories in youtube, myspace, google and others how would you classify your music and videos?

It’s funny, I’m really just getting used to having cameras around all the time. It’s fun most of the time, but there’s times when you just want to be alone. Right now, we’re capturing a lot of behind the scenes footage, both of the music making process, and our everday lives. As we get closer to the album’s release, you can expect a couple of official music videos.

7) What are your earliest memories of music while growing up? Where did you grow up?

My First Sony!. It was a little boombox, with a microphone that my mom gave me. I raided her tapes, Whitney Houston – The Greatest Love of All, Mariah Carey- Vision of Love. I just remember music always being on in my apartment. And in the lower, in the summer, people play music outside on the block.

8) Who would you like your music to reach?

First and foremost, I write music to express my emotions. It’s my only means of expression. I don’t really like to talk about my feelings, so music has always been release.

I listen to music from around the world, and I’d like my music to reach people on that same level. The great thing about music is that a girl in New York City can have the same reaction to a song as somebody in Tokyo or Europe. Music has historically been a uniting force amongst cultures, and I hope that my music can reach people in the same way.

9) Are you in a relationship? How do you like to spend your free time?

I’m in a relationship with music. Free time is really a relative thing. I approach every day like there’s no time to waste. Of course I don’t make music 100% of the time. I like to go to restaurants a lot. I also love to cook. Just about the only TV I watch is the Food Network.

My friends and I definitely like to go out and have a good time. I think that when you work hard, its important to make room for a little fun. but At the same time, make sure to maintain a good balance. In the past I’ve been known and have seen a lot of people push things to extremes.

Just about everything I do involves music somehow. If I’m out, I’m always listening for new music, and seeing wha’ts moving people. If I’m working out or shopping, you’re probably gonna see me with my iPod. Music is the soundtrack to life.

10) Which one of your favorite artist would you like to collaborate with if given the opportunity?

That’s a hard question, with a much harder answer. Between the two of us, we’ve both worked in so many different genres of music that to choose one artist would be almost impossible. You might hear us working with a rock band one day, and a gangster rapper the next. I guess to sum it up, I’d like to collaborate with artists that are going to bring something unique to the track, and bring out something in me I didn’t even know was there.

Tres Monos, a group from Austria has a unique style of expressing and communicating with different cultures through music. Music is an universal language. While we can read countless books and articles about geography and science, music delivers an emotion or experience that most humans can relate to or react to.

LaUnion1910: How did you guys come together to form 'Tres Monos'? Why did you choose the name in Spanish?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Campoz and I (Topoke) were actually in a bigbeat x-over band together called 'Drown A Fish'. In 2003 the band broke up and two of the five decided to continue making music - it is important for me to talk about what happens around me and also tell others not to be blind to the world we live in! Basically doing the opposite of what the "three monkeys" in the fabel do. Three monkeys - spanish : tres monos = sounds good!

LaUnion1910: Where did you guys grow up? Where are you based off now?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Campoz and I were both born in Vienna/Austria. But I left for the Congo (back then known as Zaire) when I was about 4 months old. I grew up in Kinshasa til I was about 15 and then moved to Austria. That's where we both met and are right now.

LaUnion1910: We heard a few of your tracks. They range from a grimy rock sound to a latin / hip hop sound. What type of music were you playing when the band first started?

Tres Monos (Topoke): The idea behind 'Tres Monos' was from the start, not to be stamped or labeled doing such or such kind of music, but to communicate with different peoples and audiences! There is a saying that goes: "If you speak one language you are one person, but if you speak two languages you are two people..."! So through music we speak and try to reach everybody and anybody!

LaUnion1910: The internet has seen a tremendous growth since it first started. How have you used the internet in your promotion and sales? What websites do you use to promote your music?

Tres Monos (Topoke): It is indeed amazing to see how fast the internet has been growing, when you consider that it is not as old as many believe! But that just speaks for the many advantages and convenieces it has brought to mankind you could say! Alongside information and entertainment, you can also grow your own business! We also have online shops handeling our music. But business stays business and follows its own laws. One of the very important laws is 'promotion'!!! LaUnion1910: What are most young people listening to in Austria? What are some of your favorite artists from Austria?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Rock in all its variaties is a well heard genre! You also have a lot of Techno and House. Hip Hop is a growing phenomenon though, but mainstream Pop rules the scene you could say!

Stereotyp which is also on myspace (myspace.com/stefanmoerth) is one of my austrian favorites - drum&bass finest!

LaUnion1910: What other musicians or groups have inspired you? what other genres do you listen to?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Lirically I have definitely been influenced by groups like 'Public Enemy', 'Ice Cube', 'Papa Wemba', 'Mpongo Love', 'Wenge Musica', 'Metallica', 'Daft Punk', just to name a few... We believe music is love - music is an underestimated force!

LaUnion1910: The U.S. elections are coming up this year. Do you vote in you country? what are your thoughts on George Bush? What is your perception of US citizens?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Voting is an important aspect of democracy. Austria is a democratic country and we are lucky to be able to express ourselves with our vote! Some people think it's worth it, others don't! I believe it is important to try to shape your future, but the question is a different one! What happens with your vote when you cast it? I can understand the resentment people have about politics, because they feel that politicians don't really take them seriously! It happens here the same as it happens in the U.S. So we shouldn't be pointing fingers at Other Peoples Presidents (you down wit OPP - that had to be)! I think that the perception of how US citizens are seen abroad will change 180 degrees with the next election. At least I hope - just like one of the candidates to the election preaches - I hope!

LaUnion1910: If you were to sum up your music and your message through music, how would you describe your experience with music in general?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Life is a constant struggle and you should never give up!

LaUnion1910: What type of music production set up do you have? what advice would you recommend for a new artist?

Tres Monos (Topoke): We like working at home, developing ideas... Nowadays anybody with a bit of knowledge and a computer can bring out his or her creativity! Do it and believe in yourself no matter what!

LaUnion1910: How do you balance family and music?

Tres Monos (Topoke): You can't! The boat keeps on rocking and you should be careful not to fall off. You try your best, thank the partner at your side who keeps on putting up with the stress, but still finds a way to hold things down and you work hard on the next move in the game called life!

LaUnion1910: What process do you have to come up with concepts for your music?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Not really! Campoz or other Producers I work with, come up with a beat and if it flashes me I take it and write something. No real concept! We spit it out as it comes, right from the gutts!

LaUnion1910: what are some of the biggest challenges for you as an independent artist? what are some of the best advantages?

Tres Monos (Topoke): Getting enough money to keep going is definitely a very big challenge and the lack of it slows down moving forward a great deal. The advantage would be to have the feeling you are in charge of your life!

Legion Of Slugs

Record labels have seem to forgotten a key step in producing and launching albums, artist development. For the most part record labels have ignored this step in their plans. Why? Maybe, because it means more investment in their part, better musicians, specialized engineers, vocal and lyrical coaches. And simply someone who guides a band or group through the process.

It is this step that Big Duke (The Psycho Realm) and Frankie Knuckles, two of the top Hip Hop producers in underground hip hop, have been successful with. They both are focused on offering their development and production services to new and experienced artists through their production company 'Sickside Street music'.

And this is how The Legion of Slugs was formed. Frankie Nuckles set out to find some of the most dedicated MCs to form Legion of Slugs. The group is formed by Frankie Nuckles as producer and MC, Alkaline, Fdubs, and Mars. The groups has spent many hours alongside Duke and Frankie developing their music and talent. 01. How did you guys come together to form the hip-hop group 'Legions of
Slugs'?

Frankie Knuckles - I decided to produce a project, and ultimately the MC's here, are what I saw fit.
Mars -Frankie Knuckles selected us.
Alkaline - I heard Frankie Knuckles from The SICKSIDE STREET MUSIC was gathering a few emcees to be on the 'Legion of Slugs' Project. So I hit him up and scheduled a few meetings and it all went on from there.

02. How did you each choose your name? what's the significance of the name
'Legion of Slugs'?

Frankie Knuckles - 'Legion of Slugs'? We plainly regulate in your face.
Legion of Slugs is plain and simple, we regulate. Frankie Knuckles stands for how I Knuckles up against other productions.
Mars - Frankie Knuckles choose the name. The names means that we are a group of regulators through our music that hit ya like the impact of a slug.
Alkaline - Just some name I went by while freestyling and shit since high school. Legion of Slugs was Frankies Idea, the name pretty much sums us up.

03. What is Big Duke's (The Psycho Realm / Sickside Street Music)
involvement with the Legion of Slugs?

Frankie Knuckles - He co-produced the project along side myself.
Mars - He co-produces the tracks with Frankie.
Alkaline - Big Duke helped us out with co-producing the entire project.

04. Your first show, as a group, was well received at the Airliner (Los
Angeles). We also saw other very talented hip-hop MC's that night;
Concrete Guerrillas, Kemo, Sicko Soldado, ISuppose, amongst others. How
does Legion of Slugs stand out as a new group with so much competition?

Frankie Knuckles - The last thing we're worried about is competition, most importantly we're entertainers, and that's exactly what we come to do. We're concept driven, so there's a purpose for every track we rock.
Mars - As you can see we were there to regulate with our music and put on a show as entertainers not rappers. We are on our own trip and don't trip on competion. We understand it is a competive industry and that is why we are so distinctive with our style, delivery, personas, and music. We are here to set trends not follow them.
Alkaline - The way the music sounds, and the diversity of our group alone stands out. Each of our deliverys and styles are completely different.

05. How would you describe the Legion of Slugs style and sound?

Frankie Knuckles - It's very dark and melodious and at the same time it carries different elements rhythmically.
Mars - We don't rhyme just to rap, we make sure we make sense on every topic or concept we are writing about. Plus we all have our own unique style that differenciates us from each other and every other hip hop/rap group.
Alkaline - There's really no set style, we just go with whatever we are feeling.

06. Tell us about the the song that is now available for download here
on LaUnion1910. Will these be part of your first EP?

Frankie Knuckles - Yes, but you can only get them here for now, until their available for purchase at an event or record store.
Mars - The songs are pretty much staight forward and self explanitory. We just make sure we flip it for ya on that street level that is intensifiying when you listen to them. Yes they will be featured on the EP,

07. Are you guys working on an album? Will Big Duke (The Psycho Realm /
Sickside Street Music) be part of the production of the album?

08. What should people look out for from Legion of Slugs in 2008?

Frankie Knuckles - To catch an elbow to the face at one of our shows, we've got the mosh pit thing going with some of the fans.
Mars - We are going to promote the fuck outta the EP and take it one step at a time.

1. where did you grow up? At what year did you realize you wanted to be an MC?
I grew up around Jefferson Park by U.S.C 36th st and Western.. Then I moved 2 midcity by Midtown shopping Center then Elsereno then Back to Midcity then later on to Culver City....I started writing in 1997 recorded my first song at Smokey Robinson's house.. It was magic from the start...

02. What type of music was being played in your home as a kid?
My dad was a Dj he played Ben E King, Tyrone Davis, James Brown, Lionel Richie, lots of soul music, HipHOP, reggae, spanish, classic rock u name it he played everything...

03. What are some of the first hip-hop songs you remember while growing up?

04. You've been working with one of LA's classic producers, Javi Lopez, for a while, how did you guys meet up?
How do you describe Javi's style? We performed at a club in 1998 and met Fernando and Jesse he told us he had a production team. NEV and I rolled down to the studio took a listen to the beats and then they asked us if we needed a Dj and we said yeah.. They called up Javie Lopez and he rolled through.. He played us his beats and we were hooked. He joined Trilogy and we were on our way.....

05. Tell us about your group "Trilogy" and members N.E.V. And Kaos. What has been your experience with Trilogy?
Good times!!! We recorded song after song rehearsed in studios and perfected stage shows.. We packed and rocked the house everytime...And with Javie Lopez beats, we were unstopable. Our Shows were so dam hyped the audience went crazy everytime... We had feel good songs and songs about life and daily struggles...

06. What are some of the producers you have worked with? Who are you working with now?
Ive worked with B REAL, Track Dilla, Kirv, Nalo, Dave Aron, XL, Keef, Javie Lopez.. Im going to continue 2 work with all these producers now and in the future...

07. We've heard you on Breal's mixtapes, how did you link up with B? Are you working with him in any future projects?
Trilogy opened up for B REAL 2 times.. He told me he made beats so we started working together. When i started working with B Real my style went to another level... B Real and Mellow is fam so im sure once im done with my project NEW WEST FREE agent I'll be back at the temple....

08. Tell us about your upcoming project with Dj EDDIE ONE OF THE HEAVY HITTERS AND DJ BABY GEE?

09. If you were to give an award for "life time achievement in hip hop", who would you give that award to? And why? LL COOL J hes been holding it down since the 80s

10. What are your plans for 2008? What can we expect from O Brown in the next few years?
Ive had positive meeting at Interscope, so my plans right now is 2 drop my mixtape and find a home.. Get that machine behind me.....ITS ABOUT THAT TIME..

Sicko Soldado

"Sicko Soldado", is the latest release by Sicko Soldado of the Dead Silence camp. Sicko Soldado is an underground MC from Los Angeles. The CD is heavily influence and produced by LA's very own Kemo 'The Blaxican. Keeping true to underground hip-hop and the Dead Silence sound. The album features artists such asJehuniko, Krazy Race, Mostro, The Hated 13, and Gremlin. It also included production from Symbolix, Topic, The Hated 13, Hands on Wax, and EM beats.

Sicko Soldado rips the beats in both and Spanish, a reflection of the LA community. He is one of the few determined MC's whos music is spreading and growing alongside his camp and the LA underground movement.

01. Where are you from and when did "Sicko Soldado" come out as an MC?

Im originally from sunland park N.M. but i was born in El Paso Tx. thier very closes cities. Sicko Soldado came out as an mc back in 99 in Denver Co. thats were i made my first song and performance.

02. What has been your experience in creating, producing, and marketing your new album? What are some of the benefits and drawbacks, if any?

Its been a good exprience for me I had done some promoting for both of Kemo the blaxican's albums and some promo for joint, so it wasnt that hard for me to know what i have to do. The benefits of promoting yourself is you get to meet alot of the people that buy your musick. The drawbacks of promoting your own stuff is that its new and some stores wont want to take a chance on your album.

03. Who was your most influential family member while growing up?

I would have to say no doubt my jefeta because she is so strong she still teaches me to be a better person.

04. Kemo - The Blaxican (Former member of Delinquent Habits) and the Dead Silence camp have been a big part of your album and music. Can you elaborate on your production and marketing team?

Alot of my production was done by Kemo, but I did have some other producers come thourgh like my homie topik fromng a different feel.

My marketing team right now is the Dead Silence Records myself and anybody who down to promote.

05. Your self titled album "Sicko Soldado" is out and generating a good buzz in Los Angeles. Can you tell us about the album and your creative and personal approach?

The album has a different feel to what is out right now. I did alot of spanish on the album but its a different kind of spanish. This album is alot about the revolution the movement but also about how we live today and the shit that goes on in the streets.

06. There seems to be a lot more underground MC's coming up in the Los Angeles Region. What are some of the hurdles underground MCs face in LA?

The shit that all underground mcs face is exposure, but little by little shit is starting to change. Another thing is we need to do our own shows set up the line ups because some promoters are shady.

07. Are you voting this year? Who would/will you vote for? What are your thoughts on voting?

No. Im not registered, but if i could vote I would vote for Hilary or Obama. I think voting is useless because the govt. does what ever they want in the end.

08. Where do you see the Dead Silence camp in 10 years?

I see Dead Silence alot bigger and alot stronger bringing out more new artist.

09. We heard you freestyle at a show out in San Bernardino, do you think freestye is an important factor in being a dope MC?

No not really a dope mc is just gotta be dope, have his own sytle.

10. What are some other genres of music do you listen to?

Would or have you make other types of music?

I listen to alot of different stuff like corridos, classick rock no country but mostly hip-hop. Yeah I would to other types of musick like to stay creative in my own way.
